Nobody in the group had further to travel than Howard Wolowitz. When we meet him, he lives with his mother, chases every woman in sight, and cannot finish a sentence without a terrible line. Then a microbiology student from The Cheesecake Factory walks into his life — and Howard and Bernadette moments become the show’s quietest, warmest love story: a man who learns to grow up, and a woman who is tougher, smarter and funnier than anyone gives her credit for.
Here are 10 scenes, in story order, that took Howard and Bernadette from a blind date to a family of four.
Best Howard and Bernadette Moments in Story Order
1. The First Meeting — “The Gorilla Experiment” (Season 3, Episode 10)
Penny sets up a double date: Leonard and Penny, Howard and Bernadette. Bernadette is a PhD student in microbiology who waits tables at The Cheesecake Factory, and she is immediately, obviously too good for Howard — which is exactly why it works. Howard brings her round to meet the gang, and within minutes he is jealous because she is genuinely interested in Leonard’s work. Bernadette does not shrink from that. She tells Howard off for being possessive, and goes to see Leonard’s work anyway. It is the first sign of the whole relationship: Howard will keep trying to control things, and Bernadette will keep refusing to be controlled. She is not impressed by him yet. She is interested in spite of him.
2. The Proposal — “The Herb Garden Germination” (Season 4, Episode 20)
By Season 4, Howard has changed — slowly, and mostly because Bernadette will not accept the old version of him. When he proposes, it is not a grand gesture with a string quartet. It is Howard, nervous and sincere, asking the one woman who has ever made him want to be better. Bernadette says yes. The joke the show never quite says out loud is that she is the one doing him the favour, and Howard knows it. From here on, every Howard story is a Bernadette story too.
3. The Bachelor Party — “The Stag Convergence” (Season 5, Episode 22)
Every wedding needs a crisis, and Howard’s arrives at his own bachelor party. Raj gets drunk, starts spilling Howard’s sexual history, and the whole thing ends up filmed and posted online. Bernadette finds out — and, reasonably, reconsiders marrying him at all. It is the last test of the old Howard: the guy with the past he is embarrassed about, facing the woman whose opinion is the only one that matters. They talk it through and make up, but the episode matters because Bernadette’s forgiveness is not automatic. She chooses him again, with her eyes open. That is worth more than a clean record.
4. The Rooftop Wedding — “The Countdown Reflection” (Season 5, Episode 24)
Howard’s NASA launch gets moved up, and suddenly the wedding is in jeopardy — he will be in space on their wedding day. Bernadette’s answer is simple: get married before he leaves. They rush to City Hall and miss the queue, so the gang improvises the most Big Bang Theory wedding imaginable. All five friends get ordained online, and they marry Howard and Bernadette on the roof of the apartment building, timed so the Google Maps satellite passes overhead and photographs them. Bernadette’s father walks her down the aisle. Each friend says a few words — Raj is too moved to finish his, Sheldon tries to do his in Klingon and is told, firmly, to do it in English. They exchange vows, kiss, and the camera pulls back until the rooftop heart they are standing in is a speck on the whole planet. It is chaotic, cheap, last-minute — and perfect for them.
5. The Star Necklace — “The Countdown Reflection” to the Season 6 Premiere
Just before the wedding, Howard gives Bernadette a necklace with a star pendant on it — a star he plans to take with him into space, so she will own a star that has actually been there. It is the most romantic thing Howard has ever done, and it is entirely in character: nerdy, literal, and completely sincere. Hours later he is strapped into a Soyuz capsule, terrified, clutching his new wedding ring, on his way to the International Space Station. He went to space as a husband. The necklace is the proof that the boy who collected women had become a man who wanted to give his wife the sky.

6. Leaving the Nest — Season 6 Premiere
From orbit, Howard finally tries to do the thing he has been avoiding for years: tell his mother he is moving out. He wants a life with Bernadette, in their own home, and his mother hears it as abandonment — her son, like his father before him, is leaving her. It is funny, because Mrs. Wolowitz’s guilt is a weapon of mass destruction, and it is sad, because Howard means it and she knows it. This is the moment Howard chooses his marriage over his childhood bedroom. He does not manage it cleanly. He never does. But he does it, and Bernadette is the reason he finally can.
7. Losing Mrs. Wolowitz — “The Comic Book Store Regeneration” (Season 8, Episode 15)
The hardest scene in their whole story has almost no jokes in it. Howard is at the comic book store when the call comes from Florida: his mother has died in her sleep while visiting family. He cannot speak. Bernadette is beside him, and then she is the one who holds everything together — the flight, the arrangements, the house that is now theirs. Afterwards, Howard and Bernadette move into his mother’s house for good, and the show quietly changes: the boy who lived with his mother is now the man of that house, with a wife who sounds, more and more, exactly like the woman they lost. The episode ends with the gang raising a glass to Mrs. Wolowitz. It is the scene that proves this couple can carry real grief, not just punchlines.
8. The Pregnancy Announcement — “The Positive Negative Reaction” (Season 9, Episode 16)
Bernadette gets pregnant by accident, and she is terrified to tell Howard — not because he will be angry, but because she knows exactly how he will react. So she tells him the Bernadette way: a Post-it Note scavenger hunt that ends with the news. Howard’s first reaction is joy. His second reaction, about five seconds later, is panic — money, religion, responsibility, everything at once. It is the most honest pregnancy announcement on television, because neither of them pretends to be ready. They are not ready. They do it anyway, together, which is the whole point of this couple: two people who keep choosing the next hard thing as a team.
9. Halley Is Born — “The Birthday Synchronicity” (Season 10, Episode 11)
Bernadette goes into labour on Amy’s birthday, and the episode runs the two stories side by side — Sheldon and Amy trying, finally, to be together, while Howard and Bernadette rush to the hospital. When the baby arrives, they name her Halley, after Halley’s Comet: a science name, from an astronaut father and a microbiologist mother, with the joke that Bernadette will not be doing that again for another 75 years. Howard runs out to the waiting room and tells Raj he will be the godfather. Then the gang gathers at the nursery window, and they know which baby is theirs instantly — hers is the one crying in a voice that sounds exactly like Mrs. Wolowitz. It is a joke, and it is also a tribute: the grandmother Halley will never meet is still in the room.

10. Neil Is Born, and the Family Finally Appears — “The Neonatal Nomenclature” (Season 11, Episode 16) to “The Stockholm Syndrome” (Season 12)
Their second child takes longer to name than to arrive. Bernadette is overdue, Howard is stalling, and the name they finally land on is Neil Michael — Neil for Armstrong, Gaiman and Diamond, Michael for reasons Bernadette insists on and Howard wisely does not argue with. The show never really shows the children — Halley and Neil are voices and cribs and off-screen chaos for years — until the very last episode. In “The Stockholm Syndrome”, the series finale, Halley and Neil appear onscreen for the only time, as the whole gang gathers for Sheldon’s Nobel moment. Howard, the man who started the series living with his mother and chasing strangers, ends it as a father of two, standing in a room full of family. That is the whole arc, in one shot.
Why Howard and Bernadette Still Work
Howard and Bernadette moments work because they are the show’s most honest trade: she gave him standards, and he gave her someone worth having standards for. He stopped being the guy with the lines, and she stopped being the sweet girl everyone underestimated — the woman who runs a pharmaceutical team, out-earns her husband, and can silence a room with one look.
