Amy and Bernadette should never have worked as friends. One was a neuroscientist who had never had a slumber party; the other was a microbiologist with a sweet voice, a steel spine and a very short fuse. They competed over Penny, they fought over husbands, and they argued about everything from bridesmaid dresses to female scientists. That is exactly why their friendship became one of the show’s best. Amy and Bernadette moments run from Season 4 to the finale: slumber parties, spy missions, a Vegas blowout, a biology conference, and the day they stopped competing and started showing up for each other.
Here are 10 Amy and Bernadette moments, in story order, that turned rivals into real friends.
Best Amy and Bernadette Moments in Story Order
1. The First Slumber Party — “The 21-Second Excitation” (Season 4, Episode 8)
Amy has never had a slumber party, so when she hears Penny and Bernadette are having a girls’ night, she invites herself along. Bernadette is the one who makes room — she does not treat Amy like a project or a punchline. The games fall flat, the pillow fight is awkward, and Amy admits she has never really had friends. Bernadette stays anyway. It is the first night the three women are a group, and Bernadette is already the one holding it together.

2. Spying on Priya — “The Wildebeest Implementation” (Season 4, Episode 22)
Penny, Amy and Bernadette go to a bar to spy on Leonard’s girlfriend Priya, and Bernadette plays the undercover agent — lying to Priya’s face about Penny starring in a 3D movie, and accidentally claiming she is dating an astronaut. Amy watches Bernadette commit to the bit with total confidence and loves every second of it. This is the scene where Amy stops being the new girl and Bernadette stops being just Howard’s girlfriend. They are in on the joke together.
3. The Bridesmaid Dress Fight — “The Isolation Permutation” (Season 5, Episode 8)
Amy finds out Penny and Bernadette went bridesmaid-dress shopping without her and is furious — not about the dresses, but because she thought she was finally included. It is the first real fight in the friendship, and Bernadette is at the centre of it: her wedding, her bridesmaids, her call. The episode matters because it proves the friendship is real enough to hurt, and because Bernadette learns the same lesson Penny does — inclusion is not a favour you do for Amy. It is the whole point.
4. The Parking Spot War — “The Parking Spot Escalation” (Season 6, Episode 9)
Howard and Sheldon fight over a parking spot at the university, and their wives pick sides — Bernadette for Howard, Amy for Sheldon — with savage remarks and spiteful little escalations. It is funny because both women are terrifyingly good at it. But it is also a turning point: they are no longer polite acquaintances being careful with each other. They can fight, say the mean thing, and still be friends on the other side of it. That is what real friendship looks like.
5. The Comic Book Store — “The Bakersfield Expedition” (Season 6, Episode 13)
The girls go to the comic book store while the guys are away, and Amy and Bernadette get a lot of attention from the men there — attention neither of them quite knows what to do with. It is a small scene and a telling one. Bernadette, the girl’s girl, and Amy, the woman who never learned the rules, are suddenly on the same side of the same joke. They laugh about it together instead of competing over it. That shift — from rivals to teammates — starts here.
6. The Biology Conference — “The Hofstadter Insufficiency” (Season 7, Episode 1)
Away at a biology conference, Amy and Bernadette get hit on by men at the hotel bar — and the night turns into one of those late-night gossip sessions every friendship needs. No Penny to mediate, no guys to perform for, just the two of them discovering they have more in common than either expected. It is the first time the show lets Amy and Bernadette carry a story alone, and it works because by now they genuinely like each other. The conference is science. The bar is friendship.
7. Afternoon Tea — “The Convention Conundrum” (Season 7, Episode 14)
While the guys fail to get Comic-Con tickets, the girls go to a fancy hotel for afternoon tea to see if they can act like grown-ups. Amy and Bernadette, two brilliant scientists who have spent their lives being taken less seriously than they deserve, sit there trying on maturity like a costume — and finding it does not quite fit. The joke lands because both of them know exactly who they are. They do not need the tea to prove anything. They just enjoy the afternoon together.
8. The Vegas Trip — “The Focus Attenuation” (Season 8, Episode 5)
The girls go to Las Vegas for the weekend, and while Penny has to stay in and study, Amy and Bernadette hit the bar by themselves — and get gloriously, unapologetically drunk. The sheltered Amy and the sweet-voiced Bernadette turn into party animals, and they even drag Penny to a strip club. It is the duo’s best episode for a reason: stripped of the guys and the group, Amy and Bernadette are simply fun together. No competition, no performance. Just two friends on a night out.

9. The Maid of Honour Rivalry — “The Matrimonial Metric” (Season 11, Episode 12)
Amy cannot choose between Penny and Bernadette as her maid of honour, and Bernadette wants the job just as much as Penny does. It is the old rivalry flaring up one last time — except now it is affectionate, not anxious. Bernadette is not fighting to be included anymore. She is fighting because she loves Amy and wants to stand beside her. When Penny finally says out loud that Amy is her best friend, Bernadette is right there, part of the family Amy built. The competition ends the moment everyone admits what they mean to each other.
10. The Sexuality Debate — “The Reclusive Potential” (Season 11, Episode 20)
Amy and Bernadette argue over whether female scientists should play up their sexuality — a real disagreement between two women who have both lived it, from opposite sides. Neither backs down, and neither takes it personally. That is how far they have come since Season 4: they can disagree about something that matters, say so plainly, and walk away still friends. It is the most grown-up scene in their whole friendship, and it proves the rivalry is gone for good.
Amy and Bernadette never got a wedding of their own, but they got the next best thing: in the Season 12 finale, Bernadette is there in Stockholm as Amy and Sheldon accept their Nobel Prize — two women scientists, once rivals for the same friend, now standing together at the top of their field. They started as strangers at a slumber party, and they ended as family — the two women who taught each other how to be a friend, and then never stopped.
