Best Penny & Amy Moments: 10 Scenes That Turned Strangers Into Besties

Penny and Amy had nothing in common when they met — one was the sociable neighbour from the Cheesecake Factory, the other a neuroscientist who had never had a slumber party. That is exactly why their friendship became one of the show’s best. Penny and Amy moments run from Season 4 to the finale: awkward first dates, girls’ nights, a giant oil painting, a Disneyland day off, and the day Penny finally said the words Amy had waited years to hear.

Here are 10 scenes, in story order, that turned strangers into besties.

Best Penny and Amy Moments in Story Order

1. The First Meeting — “The Robotic Manipulation” (Season 4, Episode 1)

Penny meets Amy while chaperoning Sheldon and Amy’s first date — a robot, a restaurant, and the most awkward third wheel in sitcom history. Amy is stiff, literal and completely out of her depth, and Penny is polite but baffled. Nothing about it says “best friends”. But Penny shows up, she stays, and she treats Amy like a person instead of a curiosity. Every friendship on this list starts here, with Penny deciding Amy is worth knowing.

2. The First Slumber Party — “The 21-Second Excitation” (Season 4, Episode 8)

Amy hears Penny and Bernadette are having a girls’ night and invites herself along, because she has never had a slumber party and has no idea how one works. The games fall flat — Amy does not know Truth or Dare, and the whole night is awkward in the best way. Then Amy admits, quietly, that she has never really had friends. Penny does not laugh at that. She just makes room. It is the first time Amy is inside the circle instead of watching it from outside.

3. The Kiss in the Pub — “The Agreement Dissection” (Season 4, Episode 21)

On a girls’ night out, Amy learns the rules of trash-talking the other women in the group — and, in the name of scientific curiosity, plants a kiss on Penny’s mouth. It is played for laughs, and it is funny. But it is also a turning point: the one-sided girl crush becomes a real friendship, out in the open, with no more pretending. After this, Amy is not Sheldon’s girlfriend who tags along. She is Penny’s friend.

4. Spying on Priya — “The Wildebeest Implementation” (Season 4, Episode 22)

Penny, Amy and Bernadette go to a bar to spy on Leonard’s girlfriend Priya, and Amy throws herself into the mission with total, joyful commitment. She is terrible at it and having the time of her life. This is the scene where Amy stops being the new girl and starts being one of the girls — in on the plan, in on the joke, and trusted with the kind of petty, silly loyalty that is what female friendship actually looks like most days.

5. Left Out of the Shopping Trip — “The Isolation Permutation” (Season 5, Episode 8)

Amy finds out Penny and Bernadette went bridesmaid-dress shopping without her, and she is furious — not because of the dresses, but because she thought she was finally included. It is the first real fight in the friendship, and it matters because it proves the friendship is real enough to hurt. Penny does not dismiss it. She learns, in that episode, that inclusion is not a favour you do for Amy. It is the whole point.

6. The Giant Painting — “The Rothman Disintegration” (Season 5, Episode 17)

Amy spends $3,000 on a huge oil painting of herself and Penny, and gives it to her as a gift. Penny is stunned — the painting barely fits on her wall, and she has no idea what to do with it. But the gesture is pure Amy: she wanted to give Penny something no one else had, something that said exactly what their friendship was. Penny keeps it. That is the whole scene, really. She keeps it.

7. Teaching Amy to Make a Scene — “The Weekend Vortex” (Season 5, Episode 19)

Sheldon stands Amy up to play video games instead of meeting her family, and Amy turns up at Penny’s apartment, upset and drinking. Penny does what a best friend does: she gets angry on Amy’s behalf, marches over, and tells Sheldon exactly what he did — loudly, in front of everyone. Amy watches her friend fight for her and learns something about standing up for herself. Penny was never just the fun one. She was the one who showed up.

8. Dominating Game Night — “The Re-Entry Minimization” (Season 6, Episode 4)

It is game night, battle of the sexes, and Leonard and Sheldon are sure they cannot lose. Amy and Penny destroy them at Pictionary so easily it barely feels like a contest. The point is not the winning. It is how in sync they are — finishing each other’s clues, laughing at the same things, operating like a team while the guys bicker. By Season 6, Penny and Amy are not two people who happen to know each other. They are a unit.

9. The Disneyland Day Off — “The Contractual Obligation Implementation” (Season 6, Episode 18)

The women decide to skip work and go to Disneyland instead, and Penny and Amy spend the day exactly like best friends on a day off: no agenda, no guys, no science, just the two of them (and Bernadette) choosing fun over obligation. It is a small episode and an important one. Friendships are not only built in the big declarations. They are built in the days you steal together for no reason at all.

10. “Amy’s My Best Friend” — “The Matrimonial Metric” (Season 11, Episode 12)

Amy cannot choose between Penny and Bernadette as her maid of honour, and Penny realises — mid-argument with Leonard — that she is jealous, because Amy is her best friend and she wants to be the one standing beside her. She storms over to Amy’s apartment and says it out loud, finally: Amy is her best friend. Amy screams “Bestie!” It took eight seasons for Penny to say the words Amy had been saying since Season 4. When she finally does, it lands like the whole friendship coming home.

Penny and Amy never got a wedding of their own, but they got the next best thing: in the finale, Penny flies to Stockholm, morning sickness and all, to watch Amy and Sheldon accept their Nobel Prize. She is there because that is what best friends do. They started as strangers on a chaperoned date, and they ended as family — the two women who taught each other how to be a friend, and then never stopped.
